What We Do

Our goal in the community is to find more ways to bring people together without your typical boundaries you might run into in these situations. We aim to open the doors for anyone from any path, offer creative outlets for mediums you have yet to explore without the financial commitment. One of the main purposes of Loose Ends is to introduce you to like-minded people who share a love and passion for creating without the pressure or anxiety of going into an unknown situation.

We aim to diminish the barriers that may be in front of you that might keep you from taking the leap to trying something new. There are so many "what if's" in life, but what if instead of expecting the worst...

What if you learned you're really good at a new craft?
What if you make a new friend?
What if you go home and find yourself so glad that you pushed yourself out of your comfort zone and had a really great time?

Who We Are

Emily McGovern (She/They)

Originally from small town BC, I moved here in 2015 and realized how challenging it is to make friends in this large of a city. I'm 26 now, and I realized that it's even harder to make friends as an adult.

I am a proud queer woman, I work at Calgary's oldest independent theatre in Kensington, a recent hairstyling program graduate, and I live with my husband and senior cat in the Beltline.

I'm a Taurus, I'm a sucker for oldies and disco/funk music, and I've tried nearly every craft under the sun but the one that has stuck recently is crochet!

Emma Bainbridge (She/Her)

A creative based out of Mohkinstisis. I'm always trying out new crafts but my current fixations are collaging, clay, and hand sewing projects.

I am a firm believer in the value of community and art. Building connection through local spaces and the arts provides essential tools for resistance, thriving communities, well-being, and a sense of identity & purpose.

My work involves slinging books at an indie bookstore, coordinating events, and supporting the day-to-day of a non-profit.

How it Started

We actually first met at Emily's place of work, both of us were working at an event for a local influencer that had published a book about her journey of starting knitting as a hobby, and how she had turned it into a full fledged career. Fitting, right?

We bonded over our mutual love for crafts, and really hit it off from day one. As the weeks passed, Emily had been tasked with organizing a craft night for work sometime in the future, and Loose Ends Instagram was born. Initially it was to gauge demand for that sort of social gathering and Emma was recruited to be a right hand man for the project.

Things blew up overnight, we had no idea how much interest there would be behind a craft club, and the yearning for gathering and community was far too large to ignore. We hit the ground running, and now we're so excited to get everyone together and help teach new art mediums, bring people together and cultivate a safe space for people from every background. Creating something from nothing is one of the most beautiful and fulfilling things that life has to offer, and it's undeniably better when you get to do it with others!
